Through the course of the novel, the reader follows the unnamed narrator (assumed to represent Lewis himself) in a sort of exploration of the afterlife reminiscent of Dante's Divine Comedy, traveling from Hell to Heaven in a dreamlike manner and experiencing the journey as a sort of metaphor that reflects truth in the real world. Chesterton (author of The Man Who Was Thursday), one of Lewis's inspirations, to create a surreal narrative filled with allegorical meaning yet not quite fitting the qualifications of a typical allegory, such as his classic children's novel The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Rather than being a novel in the traditional sense, this book follows more the tradition of G.K. The Great Divorce is one of Lewis's most intriguing pieces of fiction. ![]() Written by people who wish to remain anonymous ![]() We are thankful for their contributions and encourage you to make your own. Despite knowing beforehand that Charlotte is already engaged to a man named Albert, who is in fact 11 years her senior, Werther falls in love with her. He meets Charlotte, a beautiful young girl who is taking care of her siblings following the death of their mother. He is enchanted by the simple ways of the peasants there. In these letters, Werther gives a very intimate account of his stay in the fictional village of Wahlheim (based on the town of Garbenheim, near Wetzlar). The majority of The Sorrows of Young Werther is presented as a collection of letters written by Werther, a young artist of highly sensitive and passionate temperament, and sent to his friend Wilhelm. So moving, in fact, that the book won author Alice Walker the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award in 1983. It's a happy ending to an otherwise pretty intense and moving story. Luckily, with the help of some dear friends and her own indomitable spirit, Celie ultimately grows stronger and discovers her own independence. If there's one thing that becomes clear in the first few chapters of this book, it's that sometimes life just isn't fair. It stars Celie, a poor black woman in the rural South, and follows her through about thirty years of her life-from repeated sexual abuse by her father as a young girl to even more abuse at the hands of her husband as an adult. This novel features a bit more than pictures of grapes, eggplants, and that weird McDonald's character.
